Fridays: Library Book Exchange. On Fridays, we give the students the opportunity to return and sign out books from our Learning Commons.

Calgary Public Library Book Truck: Please stay posted to the blog for updates on when the C.P.L. Book Truck visits our school.

Problem Solving Strategies:
Problem solving is an important part of the math curriculum and is woven into each math concept that is taught. These past couple of weeks, the grade 2's have learned a variety of different strategies to apply when solving problems.

They have come to discover that even though we can all be working on the same problem, different students will apply different strategies to solve problems. We also discussed the importance of struggle in problem solving and learning.  Struggles help us to grow as learners and it is important that we take risks by jumping into "The Learning Pit" in order to grow and develop.

Take a look at the visual in our classroom that shows the Problem Solving Strategies we have learned so far.

**When going through the Feedback Friday work - see if your child can tell you about the strategy/strategies they used to solve the problem.

November 4th- November 8th

This past week, the students practiced summarizing the important parts of stories in songs by using the organizer of :

Somebody,
Wanted,
But,
So,
Then

This strategy is used during or after reading. It provides a framework to use when summarizing the action of a story or historical event by identifying key elements. The strategy also helps students identify the main ideas, recognize cause and effect relationships, make generalizations, identify differences between characters and look at various points of view.

Students are encouraged to practice using this summarizing organizer during home reading to check for understanding.

Spelling Words for the week of Nov. 12th:
what, out, our, there, is, in, it, me, at, was

Volunteers Needed!
In light of the recent announcement of budget cuts within the C.B.E. and anticipated reductions in support, we are asking for parent volunteers to listen to students read and play educational games. We are grateful for any time you can spare – even 45 minutes per week. Please contact Mrs. MacKenzie in the school office at 403-817-3576 or lamackenzie@cbe.ab.ca if you can help. In order to volunteer, you must have a current C.B.E. police clearance, which Mrs. MacKenzie can also help you with. More information about impacts to the school will be forthcoming.

Book Truck Visit – Wednesday, November 20th
The Calgary Public Library Book Truck will be coming on November 20, 2019 between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm. Only the Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students  will be able to use the services of the Book Truck this month. Any books that were taken out last month’s visit should be returned to the Learning Commons by November 20th.  The Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 students will be able to use the Book Truck on the December visit. As so many students are eager to visit the Book Truck, this will allow adequate time for students to make their selections.
